Ro-Ro vs Container Shipping for Cars from China
By the EVtoU export team

Ro-Ro is usually the economical choice for larger batches going to ports with regular car-carrier calls; containers are better when you want more protection, are shipping a mixed or small order, or your port has no Ro-Ro service. Most exporters quote both and let the route decide.
How does Ro-Ro shipping work?
Roll-on/roll-off vessels are floating car parks: vehicles are driven up a ramp and secured on internal decks. There is no container handling, and loading and unloading are quick. Vehicles must be drivable, and personal items are generally not allowed inside.
How does container shipping work?
Vehicles are driven or lifted into 20-foot or 40-foot containers and lashed to the floor. Two-tier steel frames let a 40-foot container carry more than one vehicle — how many depends on vehicle size. The container is sealed in China and opened at destination, which protects the vehicles from weather and handling.
| Factor | Ro-Ro | Container |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Larger batches of drivable vehicles | Small, mixed or high-value orders |
| Protection | Covered deck, exposed during port handling | Sealed box from China to destination |
| Port coverage | Ports with car-carrier services | Most container ports |
| Mixed models | Yes | Yes — loading can be optimised per container |
| Cost driver | Vehicle size (volume) | Number of containers |
Which method is cheaper?
It depends on the route, the vehicle size and how many vehicles you ship. Ro-Ro is priced by vehicle volume, so large MPVs and SUVs cost more per unit. Container freight is priced per box, so fitting more vehicles into each container lowers the cost per car. EVtoU accepts mixed-model orders and plans container loading to save on shipping costs.
What about new energy vehicles?
Plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles contain lithium-ion batteries, which shipping lines treat as dangerous goods with extra declaration and handling rules. Your exporter handles the declarations, but expect the shipping line to have specific requirements for battery state of charge and documentation. Browse GAC new energy vehicles.
